SYLVIA HADLOW (prev HARPER) 1921 to 2004

Many people from Weybridge and Shepperton will remember Sylvia Hadlow as a familiar figure making her way, several times a week for decades, from her bungalow on Hamhaugh Island to Weybridge Ladies Amateur Rowing Club. Sylvia had been a member of WLARC since the 1950s and had won numerous cups for rowing and sculling. In 1962, she won the Head of the River in a single scull in 8minutes 29 seconds, a record (since the course has now changed) that remains unbeaten.

Amy Gentry had established WLARC in 1926 and when she died 50 years later, she left the club in Sylvia's care. Sylvia dedicated her life to overseeing the running of the club, which has had much success over the years and continues to flourish. Until her health began to fail in recent years, Sylvia's home-made cakes were a renowned attraction at the annual regatta and countless fundraising events. She also supported the Desborough Players and many other local organisations, and was a member of St James' Church.

Sadly, Sylvia died on July 10th in Ashford Hospital. A memorial service was held in St James' Church, Weybridge, on Saturday 11th September, followed by a celebration of her life at the WLARC boathouse, Thames Street.
