| Walton Small Boats Head. Saturday 6th December 2003 |
|
Over 400 boats went head to head against a strong head wind. Well, it was a head race, after all. Competitors in division one were treated to a display of remarkable river navigation when a barge, having woken up to find it was in the middle of a race, tried a not-so-swift U-turn and blocked the racing channel. Weybrige Ladies had 14 entries, their results can be found here. For the full results please see the Walton Rowing Club site. |

| Capsize drill. Dorney Lake Saturday 13th September 2003 |
With safety swimmers bobbing around in wetsuits, the Safety Launch out on the water and a refreshing lake to dip in, it was the perfect setup for some realistic capsize training.
Learning what to do in the event of a capsize is an important part of
water safety, even for the experienced rower. It's not about trying
to look stylish as you make an unscheduled exit, but some people managed
that, nevertheless..

GB trials, Thursday 26th June 2003
|
|
On Thursday Julia took part in a trial to determine who would represent Great Britain as the lightweight pair at Lucerne Regatta and the World Championships. Julia was racing with her pair partner (Michelle Dollimore from Kingston RC), against the girls who represented GB in the pair last year. The opposition were the current world champions, who won gold at the Worlds in Seville last September. A shaky start and a few near misses with bouys meant that they lost almost a length off the start, but by 250m they were already rowing through the opposition, and the final verdict was a win by 16s. So they're off to Lucerne Regatta on Sunday 13th July, and if that goes well the main event of the summer will be the World Championships in Milan in August. |
| Henley Women's Regatta Saturday 21st June 2003 |
| WLARC entered one crew ( Claire Traynor, Amy Bezant, Catheriine Pettman, Hilary Poole ) in the newly offered club Quad event. Our first race was against Notts County Rowing Association. The race started off for the WLARC crew well rating 40 strokes pm eventually settling to 36. Crews were evenly placed past the Island into the enclosure but Notts County eventually powered through to win by 2 1/2 lengths in 5 mins 18sec. Unfortunately it was an early exit from the competition for WLARC despite a solid performance. |

GB trials, Belgium w/e 27th April 2003
|
|
The GB trials were held in Hazewinkel, Belgium over the easter weekend, with 140 invited athletes participating, ranging from Cracknell and Pinsent in the heavyweight men to the lightweight women. Racing was held over 2000m, with heats, semis and finals. Julia came 2nd in her heat and then 2nd in her semi-final, which gained her a place in the A final. After a slow start and some dubious steering, she came last in the final by 0.3s, so the final result was a 6th position. Following this result she will begin training with the GB squad at Dorney some weekends, with the possibility of racing in the lightweight single or pair later on in the year. |
| Teddington Sculls 5th April 2003 |
| "Perfect sailing conditions" was how the weather was described, ideal for a sculling competition then! To see how the J16s managed to avoid early baths for a WLARC 1,2,3 click here! |

Kingston Head 22nd March 2003 Course was 5000m downstream. We entered the WS1 category, as this was the only one that offered women's quads, in the 'Belvedere' (Try Homes boat) crewed by Hilary Poole, Catherine Pettman, Claire Traynor and Amy Bezant. One other boat entered from Kingston R.C. Good conditions for racing - sunny, flat water and a slight head wind. Kingston R.C. set off immediately in front of WLARC. We overtook K.R.C. on the Thames Ditton bend and steadily pulled away. WLARC finished in 19.57 mins, K.R.C. in 18.53 mins |
|
Boston trial, 8th February 2003 The third long-distance GB trial was held over 5000m in Boston on the 8th of Feb. This was the final trial which was open to anyone, so the last opportunity to catch the GB squad selectors' attention and get invited to the final trials in Hazewinkel. Julia raced in the lightweight division and came 7th after a solid race, in a time of 19:37. Combining the results of all the trials places her somewhere between 9th and 11th out of the trialists, so with only 7 sculling seats in the GB squad it looks like she'll have to wait until next year. |

26th Thames Valley Oarsmen's Cross-Country Race, 25th January 2003 Any self-respecting cross country race has its fair share of mud, and this
was a very respectable event. The start was dry though, and 3.5 miles
later Julia squelched into 2nd place in the women's race. |
