The Christmas Party, 7th December 2002

The Sculler's Head, 30th November 2002

Abandoned by everyone else who entered from WLARC, I was left to face the Tideway alone, so was very relieved to arrive at the river to find flat water and unusually kind conditions for my first time steering on the Tideway.

I started off 407th in the huge divison, but the long wait on the start was livened up by the chaos ensuing as scullers spun to set off for the race, with one sculler capsizing and many more have close escapes. Despite an early collision with a large tree stump, which took me by far the closest I've ever been to capsizing during a race, I made my way through the pack of Senior 3 lightweights, with a row which felt more scrappy and frantic than I've raced for a while.

I completed the 4.25 miles in 22:23, winning the WS3lwt pennant (with my name in the Times results service!!), and was the fastest lightweight woman, ahead of a couple of girls from the GB squad. I was 4th fastest woman overall.

Thanks to Claire and Roger for their support and advice!

Events update, 29th November 2002

Tiffin Head was cancelled due to the Red Boarding on the river, likewise, Hampton small boats was also cancelled. Looks like Walton Small Boats will follow suit. The club has been making use of Dorney Lake, along with the rest of the Thames Valley. The great thing about being at Dorney is rowing with a fantastic smell of bacon sandwiches wafting from the Cafe above the boathouse........mmmmmmm

This weekend sees Julia competing in the scullers head, Hilary and Claire have unfortunately had to pull out. What about the rest of us? We will be eating...oh I mean rowing down at Dorney Lake. Perhaps we may get an entry or two into Burway on the 14th, weather and water permitting.

Good luck to Julia this weekend.

Indoor Rowing Championships, 16th November 2002

Due to Strong stream and foggy weather, Tiffin Head has been postponed until January 18th, weather and water permitting. Whilst most of the club spent two days plodging through muddy puddles on the towpath, Julia was racing her heart out at the Indoor Rowing Championships in Birmingham. Was the drive up to Birmingham worth it? You Bet. Julia came 2nd out of 35 in the lightweight Open event. She completed the 2000m test in a time of 7.14.5 pulling an average split of 1.48.6, beating 4 international rowers from Spain, Greece and Holland and coming 2nd to the world record holder from the US Team. This should give the rest of us some inspiration when completing our 2k test this week ... puff, pant...
Congratulations Julia on a fantastic result.

There are no entries for Hampton this week due to the fact that the water is still on red alert. The Captain is hoping to take us to Dorney so we can remember what being in a boat is like!

Kingston Small Boats Head, 2nd November 2002

Winners in both divisions at Kingston last Saturday. The womens quad of Claire (stroke), Catherine, Julia and Jill won in the WS3 Quads in Division one, overtaking both Molesey and Walbrook. According to the results they also beat University of Birmingham, where they started is a mystery as they weren't in the quad pack when the girls started. However, the girls completed the 4,800 meter course in a time of 17mins 4 seconds. Apparently they started in wind and rain after a sunny warm up, who knows what time they would have done if the weather hadn't frozen them on the start !! Well done girls.

Julia won in the second division in the WS3 1x, in a time of 18mins 39 secs, with a bumper of KGS girls between them, Claire completed the course in a time of 20mins 51secs. Well done to Julia on her second win that day.

You should be able to see the senior and junior girls in action at Tiffin Small Boats on 16th November.

Henley Long Distance Sculls, 26th October 2002

Well its not called Long Distance for nothing. With gusting wind, and 500m taken off the start line because of white horses, the WS2 4x came a hard fought second to Upper Thames. UTRC winning in a time of 13.27, The WLARC Quad coming 12 seconds behind in a time of 13.39. Not bad considering the crew of Claire, Catherine, Julia and Jill was only put together the week previous.

Those girls who raced in the first round where put off boating their singles in the second division due to the weather. Julia, undeterred by the wind in the 2 seat of the Quad, raced in her single coming...FIRST in WS3 1x in a time of 14.16. Hilary came in a bit later in a time of 16.49, with the age old excuse of a branch round her fin. Hilary, you need a new excuse this year!

Great results girls, well done Julia, again, for winning the Womens Senior 3 singles.

The girls can next be seen racing at Kingston Small Boats Head on Sunday 3rd November.

Boston Senior Trials, 19th October 2002

Who said a burgashell can't go fast. Julia Warren, sculling in the club burgashell 'Lady May' put the empachers to shame last weekend coming 4th in the womens lightweight singles. 48 women took part in the lightweight division in the first of the senior trials held in Boston. The 5k test was sculled by Julia in a time of 21.02.

Our congratulations go to Julia, and the club wishes her well on the second test which is at the indoor ergo champs.

The seniors will be racing alongside Julia this weekend at Henley Sculls.

Weybridge Silver Sculls, 12th October 2002

We had 17 entries in the Weybridge Silver Sculls covering both junior and senior divisions.

Well done to Julia Warren who was the fastest woman in the Silvers Sculls and was rewarded with a lidded Tankard. Julia came 1st in WSn2 and WSn3 single sculls and we wish her well this weekend in the first of the winter trials in Boston.

A fantastic effort was put in by our WN2x, of Tori Taylor and Joanne Sims who came second in the Novice Doubles, beating both the Weybridge RC scullers. Joanne has only been sculling for 3 months. They both look like being a strong pair for the senior squad.

The junior womens racing is currently at a high standard and all the girls put in some great racing and should be very pleased with their performances on the day.

A big thank you to all who supported throughout the day, and Good luck to Julia at trials. Sock it to 'em girl.

Pairs Head, 5th October 2002

Jill and Paul Cobbett competed in Mixed Elite doubles, and completed the course in a time of 12.46, coming third in their category.

Nicola Brixey and Julia Warren came 7th in the WSn3 doubles in a time of 13.21, and Hilary Poole and Tracey Scotton also raced WSn3 doubles coming 5 places behind Nic and Julia, in at 13th in a time of 13.34. Thirty crews raced at Wsn3 level, so both crews did really well.

There was some tough competition all round and each crew put in an excellent performance.

We are hopeful of sucess in the Weybridge Silver Sculls this Saturday with 17 entries covering both junior and senior racing.

Wallingford Long Distance Sculls, 28th September 2002
